From Skinny Me to an IFBB Pro Bodybuilder

One summer when I went back home to the Philippines, we drove to my aunt and uncle’s house and was greeted by my male cousin. His first comment was, “You don’t look like you’re married.”
STOP! What is a married woman supposed to look like?
Prior to this trip, I’d been teaching aerobics and lifting weights with a commitment to fitness. The result was a transformed body that looked healthier, fitter and mostly -stronger. Compared to the Filipino “norm,” most women are “not meant to be muscular or physically strong.” They’re mostly soft and cuddly. Most married Filipino woman are described as “matronly, skinny fats, and of course can’t handle physical labor because they have maids to do stuff for them.” But of course I’m talking in general like your middle to upper class Filipino women. They’re favorite thing to do is shop, and shop, and shop…LOL
After the initial comment from my cousin, I lifted my luggage with one arm while my uncle stood there and complimented how strong I was. That compliment was so empowering. It felt so good to not have to rely on him to carry my stuff for me. The realization that I can do it myself with my new found strength and independence was an awesome feeling!
I can go on and on with lots of stories about people who mislabeled me based on how I look and trying to confine me based on being: “married, a woman, Filipino, my age…” Ultimately, it’s my choice. I’ve chosen to be lean, fit, strong and healthy. What’s your choice?
You don’t need validation from anyone about how you want to look and feel. You have the greatest power of choosing what your next journey is going to be. You just have to be strong-willed and take that next step by committing to work hard and do what it takes to get you there. Simple things comes easy and also leave as quickly as they came. “Everlasting” change takes guts…courage…and determination.
