Vacation Without Temptation
Vacation –it’s good for the mind, body and spirit…WAIT. Maybe not the body. After all the time and energy you’ve spent getting comfortable in your beach-wear, you don’t need to sabotage it with a few days of binging. You can go on vacation AND enjoy spontaneous dining with a few tips to help keep you on track:
1. Rise-n-Shine & HIIT Some Workouts Get up at least 20 minutes earlier to get the blood flowing and kick-start your metabolism. The other bonus from getting up a few minutes before everyone else is you don’t have to stress about when to fit your workout in.
2. Plan and Pack It’s nearly impossible to think of every scenario, but you can count on one thing…junk food will be more abundant than healthy –so bring along healthy snack options or scope out where you can purchase some at your destination. These are even available at most airports if you’re really stretched for time. Here are perfect on-the-go snacks:
Healthy snack bars (Quest bars are amazing!)
All-natural beef jerky (satisfies the carnivore within)
Trail mix of dried fruit and nuts (perfect for keeping the metabolism humming between meals)
3. Good Indulgence What’s so much fun about vacation is trying out local flavors and new restaurants. It’s okay to have a cocktail and a meal that’s a little sinful, but avoid making this a routine over the duration of your vacation. Aim for eating healthy for two out of the three meals each day. Just one “cheat meal.” This rule will help you get the most out of your vacation without compromising all your hard work.
4. Order Healthy Foods
Whatever your favorite meal is, try eating your greens first. And dressing? Have it on the side. Say “no” to fatty appetizers. Don’t be timid about asking your server to leave out the additives, like butter, salt, etc. OR how the food is prepared. Go for the nutrient-dense foods. Base your selection on items that AREN’T labeled as “fried, sautéed, breaded, creamy, au gratin –or anything made with butter. You won’t go wrong with “steamed, stir-fried, charbroiled, grilled, poached, broiled, or roasted. And now a word of caution….BUFFETS. While they are hard to resist for many, it’s even harder to gauge your portion sizes. You may want to pass on the buffet to save your waistline and your sanity.
